March is Preparing for Spring Month

When preparing your horse for spring, your farrier plays a crucial role in ensuring their hoof health. Here's what they need to consider:

  • Increased Hoof Growth:

    • Spring often brings increased hoof growth due to richer grazing and better nutrition. Your farrier will need to adjust their trimming schedule accordingly.

    • They'll focus on maintaining proper hoof balance and shape to prevent issues caused by rapid growth.

  • Addressing Winter Damage:

    • Winter conditions, such as mud and moisture, can lead to hoof problems like thrush or abscesses. Your farrier will need to assess and treat any existing issues.

    • They'll pay close attention to cracks or separations in the hoof wall, which can be entry points for bacteria.

  • Adapting to Changing Ground Conditions:

    • As the ground transitions from frozen to soft and muddy, your farrier may need to adjust shoeing or trimming techniques.

    • They may recommend specific shoe types or pads to provide better traction and support in varying terrain.

  • Regular Maintenance:

    • Regular trimming and shoeing are essential for maintaining hoof health throughout the spring season.

    • Your farrier will help ensure your horse's hooves are in optimal condition for increased activity and turnout.

  • Hoof Health Assessment:

    • It is very important for the farrier to assess the overall health of the hoof, and to check for any signs of infection, or other issues.

Spring season tasks to keep up with:

  • Inspect and clean hooves daily.

  • Ensure adequate turnout/exercise and nutrition.

  • Assess diet and adjust for lush spring grass to prevent your horse from developing pasture-associated laminitis (a very painful hoof disease).

  • Discuss summer activities with your farrier and the appropriate trim/shoe for summer.

  • As hoof growth speeds up with warm weather and spring grass growth, adjust your trim/shoe schedule accordingly.

  • Increase turnout and activity levels gradually to prevent hoof problems from developing.

In essence, your farrier will be focused on:

  • Maintaining hoof balance.

  • Addressing any existing hoof problems.

  • Adapting to the changing season.

By working closely with your farrier, you can help ensure your horse's hooves are healthy and ready for the spring season.
